SIDS Calgary Society is a beacon of support for families navigating the sudden and unimaginable loss of a child
We provide compassionate support, advocate for awareness, educate healthcare professionals and the public, and fund vital research to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Sudden Unexplained Death of a Child. Together, we honour every child and strive for a future without SIDS and SUDC.
SIDS & SUDC
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden, unexplained death of an otherwise healthy infant under one year of age, typically occurring during sleep. Despite thorough investigations, no cause of death is found.
Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) refers to the sudden and unexpected death of a child over one year of age that remains unexplained after a comprehensive investigation, including autopsy and medical history review.

ABOUT
SIDS Calgary Society began as a small, dedicated parent support group in Calgary. In 1976, it became a chapter of the Canadian Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (CFSID, now known as Baby’s Breath). On June 22, 2000, the organization evolved into an independent entity, officially becoming SIDS Calgary Society. A year later, it was formally recognized as a registered charity.
Today, SIDS Calgary Society continues its vital work by providing support to families, raising awareness, and funding critical research. Through community-driven fundraising events, such as casino nights and annual picnics, we strive to honour the lives of children lost too soon, support our bereaved family community and advocate for baby safety and policy change.
Occurrence of SIDS has been declining for 4 generations due to SIDS research, and awareness. In 1999, the US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) launched the “Back to Sleep” Campaign that led to a 45% decrease of SIDS.
This is just one example of how research can save young lives.
